Hi. My name is Mike Durand and I would like to introduce myself to this forum. I started work at Valve in June and have been given the task of working directly with the MOD community. This means that my primary responsibilities are to package and release the SDK, make it easier to use, and work with MOD makers on problems that they can't solve with the help of other members of the community.

My full time job is to make sure that you have everything they need to build your games. I'll be monitoring this forum, the hlcoders list, as well as the VDC, but you can also feel free to contact me directly with any questions you have at mdurand@valvesoftware.com.

So now that the introduction is out of the way here's the part that you really care about: an SDK update is coming out very soon. Right now we are testing it in-house and getting ready for its beta release. It will be available later this week unless we encounter serious problems during testing. I'll let people know either way, whether it is going to be this week or next.

I'd like to take advantage of this opportunity immediately and have just sent you an e-mail. It's nice to know that you are here and that there is someone from Valve actually looking at these forums anymore.

At least we won't feel like the wicked-little-step-children anymore. :)

You got a big job ahead of you but I'm glad that Valve decided to do something so that we have somebody to complain bitch moan whine convey our concerns over the SDK progress.

Welcome aboard!

Will the update fix the tearing models/masks problem I'm sure you're aware of?

I am now working in -dxlevel 80 which works. I was just slightly wondering, it doesn't break anything goes it?

Hi ya!

We at insects-infestation have been waiting on this for quite a while, glad to see the update is on its way.

I'm sure you're going to be swamped with requests from mod teams, good luck. :)

Hi All-

Just an update on the SDK Release:

We are having an issue with getting the new SDK to work as a beta alongside the shipping SDK. Since we don't want to cause any problems for MOD makers we are going to delay the release until next week in order to work out this issue.

I'll keep you posted.

-Mike

I'm sure we'd all rather wait a week than have any risk of corrupting or convoluting our projects, so a delay seems like a wise decision.

I guess a question a lot of people have is, will we see better Visual Studio 2005 Express support? I'm sure we've all visited this page: http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2005/aug05/08-31ValveCPlusPlusPR.mspx

I'm overjoyed to hear there is an update coming within the next few weeks, and also glad to see that Valve's got our back!

Mike's already said that this update won't include 2005 support.

Hi-

We decided to prioritize getting you guys new code ahead of VS 2005 and VC++ Express support. But I'll begin working on that as soon as this version of the SDK ships.

Can I assume there will be a fix for the 3d view (model distortion) and cubemap problems (lump error), for those of us that use ATI cards?

Hi All-

Since everyone is curious as to what is in this SDK release here is a
very coarse summary of what's included:

What This Release Has
*********************
Lots of source code updates from the Episode 1 production code
Hammer, Faceposer, Model Viewer updates
Access to the Ep1 version of the Source Engine binaries

What It Doesn't Have
********************
Visual Studio 2005 Support (it will be in the next SDK release)
Improved server plugins for bots (on my to-do list)
Anything from Episode 2, Portal, Team Fortress

The actual release notes will have MUCH more detail. But I wanted to set
everyone's expectations until then. Our goal with this release was to
get source code updates to you since that hasn't happened for a while.
Once this release is done then I can spend time on many of the specifc
problems that you guys have named.

-Mike

Since the release of EP1 all my source games crash. Are valve aware of this and what are they doing about it.
Before you ask yes I've updated my graphics drivers and yes I've rolled back to previous drivers that I know work.I also know that the games like counter strike source should not have been affected by EP1 updates.Help me please I know I'm not the only one with this problem.

When does it crash, tried starting any of your games in windowed mode?
