I started this church map for CS: S. So far, it seems to be coming along well. I am using some of my own textures.

http://img387.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cschurchsancsound3qx8.jpg

The sanctuary is VERY rough. It will have a some side areas, a podium, etc. I'm hoping this will turn out really well. I know there are some problems with cubemaps (the really shiny hands), but those will all be fixed once I finish the map.

The wall texture and the tan carpet texture are really crappy. I'm gonna make a better version of those soon ..., hopefully.

Also, this is based off of a real location.

What an ironic place for a game full of killing.

I love the irony. :D

Lookin' good too!

However, one suggestion, you may want to tone down the lights a bit, they seem a bit over-bright.

Yeah, right now the lights are just there. Once I build the rest of the building, and get an light_environment in there, then I'll start tweaking the lights.

Unless you're using text lights, you're doing something very wrong. I can see many lights across a small section. This is not needed and will only add to your RAD times.

Use fewer lights in the right places, with the correct values.

Also, I suggest you spend time finishing one small area before attempting any other section of the map. This helps you avoid future problems, and lets you carry a consistent theme throughout the map once one is established.

The lights right now are just fillers. Once I build the building, then I'm going to go back and see how many lights are in what locations and then tone them accordingly.

Also, compiling the map isn't really that much of a problem. It only takes about a minute (probably less) to build the entire thing. In fact, I think VRAD is the shortest of the three.

That's not much of a problem. :Þ

I've added another room to the foyer.

Once again, yes, I know there are some cubemap issues. Those will be fixed when it is finished.

I've expanded on the sanctuary a bit.

Pretty much all of these textures are fillers right now.

Thanks. I don't necessarily think it's too early for screenshots, I think it's moreover that I'm taking too many, especially on the little details.

Anyhow, yes indeed, I will continue to work in this. Maybe I'll post a few more screenshots once the upstairs is finished.

Thanks for posting your WIP, I love reading others WIP threads, it's great for inspiration and a different way of thinking.
If you're posting to get some advice also here's mine;

There really isn't too much in the geometry that jumps out and says "Church" besides the pitched roof. I would add more pillars if I were you as well as make the windows look more church like - with arcs - rather than just square.

lol

Well, I'm trying to make it look as close to the real one as possible. I guess the church I'm mapping doesn't look too much like a church. :Þ

I've been sick these past few days, so I haven't worked on it for a while. I'll be working on it again soon.

i'm not sure which denominations exactly, but i've seen pictures of churches that look like this...

...maybe presbyterian or methodist or something... i'm not sure, but it looks ok as far as being a church (of whichever particular denomination it is).

It's been a while since I've worked on this map (over 2 weeks). Everytime I go I keep on forgetting to bring my camera with me. >_<

Anyhow, I've added a couple new things and put in some better looking textures. I know I haven't added that many new areas, but they will be in there soon.

First off, I've updated the carpet and wall textures, added a nice little overlay to the walls of the sanctuary, and made better looking textures for one of the shelves.

http://img373.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cschurchnewcarpetru3.jpg
http://img373.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cschurchnewdecalae1.jpg
http://img373.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cschurchnewwallqk8.jpg
http://img359.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cschurchmoarnewtextureswh5.jpg

From these two screenies you can see how the foyer has changed since the first time I've posted.

http://img359.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cschurchfoyerpj7.jpg
http://img359.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cschurchfoyer2ll6.jpg

The stairs now look closer to the real thing. The second screeny is just to show off the physbox.

http://img373.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cschurchstairslt7.jpg
http://img373.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cschurchstairs2dn3.jpg

I have added another area that contains a couple of physboxes.

http://img359.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cschurchhallrightjt5.jpg
http://img359.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cschurchcryroomcz4.jpg
http://img359.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cschurchcryroom2vv8.jpg
http://img359.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cschurchcryroom3te1.jpg
http://img359.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cschurchcryroom4jg4.jpg
http://img359.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cschurchcryroom5xj4.jpg

For the desk in the cry room. I couldn't get a good pictures of it without the flash (for the texture). So I'll have to do with the shiny spot on the texture.

http://img359.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cschurchdeskjw1.jpg

Now that I've gotten these areas pretty much completed, I'll be moving on to the other side areas of the upstairs.

NOTE: All these screenies were taken with only the VBSP build of the map. I didn't run VVIS and VRAD. I just wanted to get the map built so I could see if everything was working properly.

I think its good that WIP threads can exist with decent constructive criticism.

Back when I was a CS mapper a few years ago, unless the map was awesome, any WIP just got slated by a large number of posters who seemed to exist purely to hate.... anyway.

I like the idea of a modern church as opposed to the usual gothic-type.

I think your brushes are too plain, you walls etc are simple block brushes with little detail to break them up and look more pleasing on the eye.

I also think that your textures look a little too "smooth", almost cartoon-like.

Keep it up though :)

ontopic.. i agree with junks.
Have you any idea what the map will look like in the end (where the hostages are/ spawnpoints etc), or do you map a room at the time , and let time deside of what your map will look like in the end?
Keep it up !

Yes, I know Geocities sucks. I haven't gotten around to moving all of the images to somewhere else.

Have you any idea what the map will look like in the end
Also, this is based off of a real location.
If you're asking what the construction of the map will look like, then yes, I do. As far as spawn points and hostages, yes, I thought about it a lot before I even started mapping and I think I have chosen the best possible locations for each team.

Okay, I've moved all of the pictures to ImageShack and have changed all of the URLs to the ImageShack images.

So, now you guys don't have to deal with Geocities telling you that my bandwidth limit has been reached after looking at four pictures. :Þ

if the map is built well, you should be able to compile with vrad and vvis on without adding too much time to the compile (judging from the amount of detail in the map thus far). putting in some lights and posting those images would give people a much better look.

fullbright lighting just looks bad no matter how good the map.

Okay, so here's what it looks like with lighting. Remember, the lighting is only temp for now, until I get in an env_light and start matching it up with the real thing.

The lighting is not my favorite. Its Very monochromatic, its yellowish or is not there and its eithier a real dull light or it far too bright (thats ignoring the over cubemapping glow). Try make it a bit more sporadic vary the color a little; one a little white, one a little blue, and keep that yellow. I guarentee they don't have identical sources of lighting throught the entire building from exactly the same batch of bulbs, It'll feel more realistic. Also create darker spots churchs (even modern ones) can have dalk somber areas that do moodily lit. Modern ones also have areas that brighten up and feel light and airy.

Keep up the good work tho.
