Could anyone shine any light on the wherabouts of the mother and baby home run by nuns in 1958. Where in Grayshott was it and when did it close?

Hi
I think it was closeded some 10-15 years ago.
Its now 'I THINK' where st anns is, opposite the footy field
I can picture the turning to it, again I think the drive way was next to the church that is there. left hand side of church.
A great shame to see it go, BUT if it was not used why keep it?
Hope this helps

There was a place where Nuns stayed for a break, not a full time convent. It was called 'The Cenacle', Nuns were often seen getting on the bus at the Waggoners Wells bend bus shelter, to go to the village. I'm not sure if it was a Mother and Baby Home though?

It was behind St Joseph's Church, where the 'gated development' has now been built.

Hello
Ill post now as im out for the day and ill also try to ask a very good mate of mine about this topic as well.

Re the size, I think it must have been a Large house/ out houses because of what they did there, looking after families, mums and/or kids i thought. I also think that the 'grounds' were BIG lots of gardens etc.
Where it 'was'. Oks from Waggies wells bend coming 'into' the village. On the right you have a house with a wall, then a private drive,(lady gate drive) then Donec, then 3-4 homes, then a Church. The drive for the Convent was then after the church. The 'new' houses next are part of the 'OLD' St Ann's. Which finishes opp. the rec. then there is a 'cough' road down to the the back of Stoney Bottom.

Take a walk and have a look, but that was where the driveway was. I was to ' young ' to remember anything else about it, I never went down the drive, to creepy :-)

Hope this helps and ill ask around for more info.

hello .you are looking for ASSISI.This was on the lane opposite GRAYSHOTT HALL health spa (or whatever its called these days)that ends up at CHURT. As local builders we used to work there. It was a very large house on the right going from grayshott towards churt (just before the little slip road back towards whitmoor vale) I went to visit a customer about 1984 ish!! and it was then private units I don't know if all had been sold or just part split off.
If we were coming though with a van we often used to give the girls a lift as it was a fair walk when pregnant from either churt or grayshott. Good luck with the search

Hello. I'm interested in these messages as I have been trying to find out some more about the background to my fathers circumstances and know he was born to an unmarried mum at Grayshott Nurses home in 1927. He was placed in the care of the Sisters of Nazareth some four years later but was cared for somewhere in Grayshott, presumably with his mum, prior to this. I am not sure the home for unmarried mothers at Assisi was set up as early as 1927 but have reason to believe that Lila Chilton-Thomas and her mother Hilda, who were resident at a house called' Yaffles in Grayshott actively supported these poor mums. They were both devout Catholics, actively involved with St Josephs Church and Lila's father, who died before they moved to Grayshott from Liverpool, had some involvement in following up child migrants sent to Canada to ensure they were well cared for. They definitely have a history as well-heeled philanthropists and both ladies appear to have acted as godparents at baptisms at St Josephs for the babies. If anyone has any information about Lila or her mother or more background to the home at Assissi I would be very keen to hear!

Assisi
In Hammer Lane – Now a private house split into separate dwellings, at one time it was used as a Catholic maternity home for unmarried mothers – We are often contacted by people who were born here and are trying to trace their mothers – a useful contact for them is the Catholic Children’s Society, 49 Russell Hill Road, Purley, Surrey CR8 2XB – Tel: 020 8668 2181 www.catholicchildrenssociety.org.uk.

I know this thread hasn't been written in for a while, but I noticed 'yaffles' pop up. Its a house just after the turning for Waggoners' Wells, I live there at the moment and we've kept the name!
